Greetings from Charlestown, Indiana. As some of you may know, this was an unexpected destination. We were supposed to be in Eastern Tennessee this week, but had a park cancel on us. So we spent 4 extra nights in Nashville trying to sell some more ads and then came up here yesterday. We are about 20 minutes north of Louisville, KY in a beautiful state park on the Ohio River (Charlestown State Park). We are going to camp out here for the duration. Terry has some park prospecting to do and then next week, we plan to go to a big RV rally in Louisville (sponsored by Camping World and Woodalls). There will be thousands of RV's, seminars, entertainment and a chance to network with fellow RV'ers, some park owners and possibly some co-workers.
We'd originally planned to camp at the rally, but after seeing this park, decided to stay here and commute. It's a beautiful park, very green, decent shade trees and nicely manicured.
As is typical with state parks, all the sites are widely spaced. As is NOT typical of state parks, we have a full hook up. What is even more surprising, is that it's available. We checked on private parks all around Louisville and most were heavily booked due to the rally. This park is almost empty!!! Very strange....but good for us. After over 4 months of staying in private parks, it's such a pleasure to be back in a state park! Can't really describe it....but it's very different. We find the people are often more friendly and outgoing in state parks. We've already met our only neighbors....a couple about our age from Florida and fellow parrot-heads (aka Jimmy Buffet fans).
We had great time in Nashville...hot days but cool nights. Every Thursday night the RV park would bring in some local entertainers. We had an excellent couple the first week....played guitar and sang (country music, of course). They were actually very good. We took our chairs, some beer, a blanket and Barklee and listened (and even danced) until almost midnight. Barklee had a blast and met lots of new friends.
We made a couple of jaunts downtown over the 4th weekend. It was our first time to experience the Nashville scene. Lots of honky-tonks...most of them with free, live music. The weather was great and we wandered in and out of several of them.
Even found a really nice pool hall with free (full sized) pool tables!
With the nice weather, they all had their doors and windows open so it was easy to see what was going on inside, even from the street. And each night they had a concert and fireworks display in a park on the riverfront.
The last Friday we were there, we went up to a little coffeehouse that Terry had signed just down the road from the RV park. It was in a 100 year old house that the owner's grandparents built and he had grown up in. After his parents died, he inherited the house, renovated it himself and turned it into a business. On Friday nights, all the local pickers show up and play (bluegrass). One of the pickers (and the one that organized it) was the 14 year old son who could play guitar, banjo, and several other instruments. The owner's wife was from Austin. We spent several hours visiting with them and listening to the pickers. Another great evening.
As I mentioned before, Terry is doing some park prospecting this week. He signed a park in Chattanooga last week and tomorrow has an appointment with a park owner in Eastern Tennessee. It's about a 4 hour drive down there, but it's a beautiful park (surrounded on 3 sides by a mountain lake) that we are anxious to sign. There are a couple other parks we want to scope out along the way. It will be a long day, but we'll head out early and just make a day of it. Since we'll be gone all day, Barklee gets to come with us. He is a great rider and ...as along as we make a few rest stops....seems content to watch the passing scenery (in between naps).
Hope all is well with you and that you are enjoying your summer. As always, please keep in touch. I know you all are very busy and we understand completely. But please know we really love hearing from you...even if it's just a quick hello. It really means a lot to us. We miss you!
